CBP Officers Seize Nearly $146K in Hard Drugs

TUCSON, Ariz. – Customs and Border Protection officers arrested a Mexican national Feb. 23 in connection to a failed attempt to smuggle more than 23 pounds of heroin and methamphetamine through the Port of Nogales.

Nogales CBP Agriculture Specialists Intercept Dangerous Citrus Pest

NOGALES, Ariz. –U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists at the Port of Nogales commercial facility intercepted a significant citrus pest, an Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) (Kuwayama), while inspecting a shipment of oranges from northern Mexico last week.

Asian citrus psyllid is capable of transmitting the bacteria that causes citrus greening disease.  While not all Asian citrus psyllids carry the disease, Mexico is known to have both Asian citrus psyllid and citrus greening disease.

Border Patrol prevents MS-13 gang members, convicted sex offenders from hitting U.S streets

TUCSON, Ariz. –Tucson Sector Border Patrol agents made 12 significant arrests between Jan. 29 and Feb. 24 involving MS-13 gang members and illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes.

Agents from the Ajo, Casa Grande and Tucson stations arrested one Mexican and two El Salvadorian nationals affiliated with the notoriously violent Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) street gang; two of whom are previously deported felons.

Two arrested, more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana confiscated

TUCSON, Ariz. — Agents from the Office of Air and Marine and the Office of Border Patrol together conducted two seizures in the Ajo area Feb. 19, netting more than 1,600 pounds of marijuana, two vehicles, and two suspects arrested.     

In the first seizure, Border Patrol agents received a tip from the public about a suspect vehicle, described as a brown Ford Explorer, transporting narcotics. When agents encountered the vehicle on FR-7, the vehicle sped away with agents in pursuit.

YUMA, Ariz. – On February 24, 2015, Yuma Station Border Patrol agents arrested two groups of illegal aliens that entered the United States from San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora, Mexico.

Wellton Border Patrol Agents continue to thwart marijuana smuggling attempts

On February 24, 2015, Wellton Station Border Patrol Agents, with the assistance of pilots from the Office of Air and Marine, discovered several backpacks filled with a green leafy substance that later tested positive for marijuana, north of the Pinacate Lava Flow area of operations.  The total weight of the marijuana was 258 pounds with a street value of $129,000.  The agents followed footprints that led away from the backpacks of marijuana and finally located seven subjects, who had all entered the United States illegally.  The group was arrested and transported to the Wellton Border Patrol Station for further processing and the marijuana was turned over to the Yuma County Narcotics Task Force.

The Border Patrol’s Yuma Sector effectively combats smuggling organizations attempting to illegally transport people and contraband through southwestern Arizona and California. Citizens can help the Border Patrol and U.S. Customs and Border Protection by calling 1-866-999-8727 toll-free to report suspicious activity. Callers can remain anonymous.

Men arrested who illegally entered the United States by crossing the Colorado River.

YUMA, Ariz. -- Early Thursday, a Yuma Station Border Patrol agent arrested a man who illegally entered the United States by crossing the Colorado River.  The subject claimed to be a United States citizen and that he crossed illegally because of an outstanding warrant. 

The subject also possessed a glass pipe, personal-use marijuana and prescription drugs.

Facebook limitará la circulación de noticias falsas

Facebook modificó su algoritmo para limitar la publicación de noticias falsas o exageradas en las páginas de inicio de los usuarios, argumentando que la circulación de éstas es una molestia para los miembros de la red.

“Hemos escuchado que los usuarios quieren ver menos posts con noticias falsas, engañosas o escandalosas. La actualización de hoy reducirá la distribución de contenidos que la gente ha reportado bajo estas categorías”, dijo el ingeniero de Software de la red social, Erich Owens.

De acuerdo con información publicada por Facebook, esto no significa que eliminarán de inmediato cualquier post que reciba un reporte de falsedad, ni tampoco verificará la veracidad de la información o contenido, sino que el trabajo de la red estará en alertar a usuarios o eliminarlos en caso de ser necesario con base en el número de reportes que reciban.

Algunos usuarios reportaron que la modificación para eliminar noticias falsas del muro de los usuarios podría afectar a sitios como The Onion en Estados Unidos o El Deforma en México.

Sin embargo, Owen informó que el cambio no debería afectar a estas páginas, dado que se tratan de sitios satíricos y no engañosos.

“Hemos detectado que la gente no tiende a reportar el contenido satírico porque tiene el objetivo de causar gracia o humor en el lector. Ese tipo de contenido no tendría por qué ser afectado por la actualización”, explicó.

Sin embargo, la red social advirtió que algunas páginas que tienden a combinar la sátira con noticias o contenidos escandalosos, falsos o engañosos podrían ver una disminución importante en el impacto que tiene dentro de la red social.
